HD Liposuction – HD LIPO

HD Liposuction: the complete guide to the muscle definition technique

High-Definition Liposuction (HD Lipo) is the evolution of traditional liposuction. Instead of just removing localized fat, the technique sculpts the body by enhancing each patient’s muscle anatomy — delivering a defined, natural and individualized body contour.

What is HD Liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the most performed plastic surgeries in the world, and for good reason: it is a procedure that leaves practically no visible scars, has an excellent safety profile and provides consistent results.

HD Lipo (High-Definition Muscle Liposuction) is the most modern and most widely used technique within liposuction today, precisely because it offers the best aesthetic results. The difference lies in the way the fat is removed: instead of uniform suction, HD Lipo removes fat strategically, enhancing the natural contours of the musculature of each patient.

The result is a body with a more athletic, defined and harmonious appearance — without this meaning weight loss or a change in the natural shape of the person’s body.

Liposuction is not weight-loss surgery

This is one of the most important points to understand before seeking the procedure: liposuction is not a weight-loss method.

It is indicated for two main patient profiles:

  1. Patients with stubborn localized fat — those “little fat pockets” that persist even with diet and regular physical exercise, generally related to genetics and the body’s natural fat distribution.
  2. Patients close to their ideal weight who wish to refine their body contour and gain more definition.

Patients with significant excess weight are generally not ideal candidates for liposuction alone — in these cases, other approaches should be discussed beforehand with the surgeon.

How does liposuction surgery work?

The procedure consists of suctioning localized fat with special cannulas, inserted through micro-incisions of 5 to 10 mm — which is why the absence of visible scars is one of the great advantages of the technique.

During surgery, the fat is removed gradually and strategically, with different types of cannulas, while the surgeon shapes the body in real time. The result of liposuction is directly proportional to the technical skill and attention to detail of the plastic surgeon who performs the procedure — which is why the professional’s experience and specialization make such a difference in the final result.

In this video, Dr. Marco Longo explains in detail how his technique of anatomical muscle-definition liposuction (HD LIPO) works. Watch and understand everything about this surgery:

HD Lipo vs. MD Lipo: what is the difference?

Within the muscle definition technique, there are two levels of result, and the choice is always the patient’s:

HD Lipo (High Definition)MD Lipo (Medium Definition)
Muscle markingMore pronounced and definedMore natural and subtle
Indicated forThose seeking a more evident athletic contourThose who prefer a discreet result, without exaggerated marking
EvaluationIndividualized according to anatomyIndividualized according to anatomy

In both cases, the central point of the technique is the same: respecting the individual muscle anatomy of each patient, instead of applying a generic definition pattern.

Liposculpture and Fat Grafting: the complement to HD Lipo

It is very common for the surgeon, during liposuction surgery, to also perform fat grafting — reusing the patient’s own fat that was removed, after special preparation, to graft it into other areas of the body and enhance the aesthetic results. When these two procedures are combined, the technical name used is Liposculpture.

Buttock Fat Grafting (Brazilian Butt Lift)

One of the most sought-after applications of fat grafting is in the buttocks. The technique, internationally known as Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), uses fat removed from other regions of the body (such as the abdomen, flanks and back) to:

  • Increase the volume of the buttocks
  • Make the shape rounder and more harmonious
  • Promote a “lifting” effect, visually raising the area

The result is twofold: the patient loses volume in the areas with unwanted localized fat and gains volume and shape exactly where she wants — using tissue from her own body, with no need for implants.

Technologies used in modern liposuction

Liposuction has evolved significantly in recent decades with the incorporation of technologies that increase safety and the quality of the result. Among the main ones:

LIPO SOUND® / VASER® (Ultrasonic Liposuction) A technology that uses ultrasonic energy to break up the fat before suction. Its main applications:

  • Secondary liposuction (revisions or surgeries in an area that has already been operated on): helps loosen the fibrosis formed by previous surgeries, making it easier to remove the remaining fat
  • Primary liposuction (first surgery in the area): reduces bleeding during the procedure — increasing the safety margin — and decreases the occurrence of skin irregularities, especially in the abdominal region

QUANTUM ® / ARGOPLASMA® / RENUVION®
A technology that uses radiofrequency energy (Quantum) or plasma (Argoplasma / Renuvion), applied to the subcutaneous tissue after fat suction to increase skin retraction in liposuction.

In this video, Dr. Marco Longo explains what an Ultrasonic HD Lipo with Renuvion® is like:

Why is the surgeon’s experience decisive in HD Lipo?

Unlike other procedures in which the result follows a more predictable pattern, HD Lipo is a technique that depends directly on the surgeon’s three-dimensional perception, anatomical knowledge and manual skill. Each patient has a unique muscle distribution, and replicating this individual anatomy during fat suction requires specific training and a keen clinical eye.

Therefore, choosing a plastic surgeon with solid experience in muscle definition is a decisive factor for the final result — far beyond the technology used during surgery.

RECOVERY:

Recovery from the surgery is quick. As there are no large incisions, the only factor that somewhat limits the patient is pain. After 3-4 days the patient can already perform all basic activities on her own. After 10-15 days she is cleared to drive. After 30-45 days exercise is allowed. For a faster recovery and better skin settling, lymphatic drainage sessions and the use of an elastic compression garment are recommended.

In case of excess or sagging skin on the abdomen (common after pregnancy and weight loss), it may be necessary to combine it with an Abdominoplasty (learn more).

A liposuction surgery performed with attention to detail and refined technique provides a natural result, without irregularities and with a high degree of patient satisfaction. Liposuction, if performed by a qualified and certified professional and when all safety recommendations are followed, is a very safe surgery.

We use ultrasonic technology (VASER | LIPO SOUND 2) to reduce vascular trauma and intraoperative bleeding, within a safety protocol that evaluates each patient individually. Learn how we assess safety in each surgery →

Frequently asked questions about HD Liposuction

Is HD Lipo for losing weight? No. Liposuction, including HD Lipo, is a body contouring surgery — not a weight-loss method. It removes localized, stubborn fat, but does not replace diet and physical exercise for overall weight loss.

What is the difference between liposuction and liposculpture? Liposuction removes localized fat. Liposculpture is the term used when, in addition to the removal, the extracted fat is reused (fat grafting) in another region of the body to improve the overall contour — as in the buttocks.

Does HD Lipo leave scars? The incisions are micro-incisions of 5 to 10 mm, strategically placed in discreet locations. With proper postoperative care, they tend to become practically imperceptible.

Can anyone have HD Lipo? The indication depends on the individual evaluation — factors such as body fat percentage, skin quality, muscle mass and general health status are considered. The consultation with the plastic surgeon is the moment to evaluate whether HD Lipo is the most suitable procedure for your case.

Can I choose the level of definition of the result? Yes. The patient actively participates in this decision, choosing between HD Lipo (more pronounced definition) or MD Lipo (more natural and subtle definition), according to her aesthetic preference.

Does buttock fat grafting (BBL) use implants? No. The technique uses exclusively fat from the patient’s own body, removed during liposuction of other regions and grafted into the buttocks after special preparation.

How do I know if HD Lipo is indicated for my case?

The evaluation takes into account:

  • The location and volume of the fat to be treated
  • The quality and elasticity of the skin
  • The existing muscle tone
  • The patient’s aesthetic goals (HD Lipo or MD Lipo)
  • The possible combination with fat grafting in other areas

If you have localized fat that resists diet and exercise, or want a more defined and harmonious body contour, the path begins with a detailed consultation with a plastic surgeon specialized in body surgery.
