Rib Remodeling

Rib Remodeling has been gaining ground in modern plastic surgery due to increasingly better results combined with a high degree of safety and satisfaction. Until recently, this procedure caused controversy and even fear among patients. But this procedure has evolved a great deal in recent years and, with improved results combined with great safety, it is being performed more and more.

The surgery is basically divided into two types: Resection of excess rib and minimally invasive Rib Remodeling.

Rib Remodeling is the minimally invasive surgery, performed through small incisions or even without any cuts (RibXScar Technique), in which the ribs are weakened with an ultrasonic scalpel (“Piezo”) and then reshaped and closed to provide a slimmer waist. The 10th, 11th, and 12th ribs can be remodeled.

In Partial Rib Resection, or resection of excess rib, the last two ribs, the 11th and 12th (floating ribs), are partially resected; that is, the excess lateral portion that prevents the waist from becoming slimmer is removed. In this surgery, a small incision is necessary to allow the rib to be removed. The 10th rib is always remodeled.

The exams required for the assessment are a chest X-ray and, most importantly, a Computed Tomography of the Costal Arches with 3D Reconstruction. After the clinical evaluation with a physical examination and review of the images, we are able to indicate the best procedure for each patient.

This surgery can be performed on its own or combined with other plastic surgeries, especially HD lipo (high-definition liposculpture). It is performed in a hospital setting under general or epidural anesthesia.

The postoperative period is practically painless, and a CORSET must be worn for 2 to 3 months, depending on the surgery performed. There are no restrictions on daily activities, but intense physical activities such as working out at the gym must be suspended while the Corset is being worn
